Michel Faber is an award-winning novelist and short story writer.
Born in the Netherlands and brought up in Australia, Faber studied Dutch, Philosophy and English at the University of Melbourne. In the 1990s, he emigrated to Scotland and started writing short fiction, publishing his debut collection Some Rain Must Fall in 1998.
Faber’s first novel, Under the Skin, was inspired by the Scottish Highlands. A refined blend of science fiction, horror and thriller, it was enthusiastically received by critics. In 2002, Faber rose to international fame with the publication of his fourth novel, The Crimson Petal and the White, which charts the path of young prostitute Sugar in 1870s London. Hailed as a postmodern tour de force, The Crimson Petal and the White became an international bestseller and was adapted as a BBC drama series starring Romola Garai in 2011.
Faber's subsequent two novels, The Fire Gospel and The Book of Strange New Things, were followed by D (A Tale of Two Worlds) in 2020. In 2024 he published his first non-fiction book "Listen".
'I'm not here to change your mind about Dusty Springfield or Shostakovich or Tupac Shakur or synthpop. I'm here to change your mind about your mind.'
Michel Faber explores two big questions: how do we listen to music and why do we listen to music? To answer these questions, he considers a range of factors, which includes age, illness, the notion of 'cool', commerce, the dichotomy between 'good' and 'bad' taste and much more.
From the award-winning author of The Crimson Petal and the White and Under the Skin, this idiosyncratic and philosophical book reflects Michel Faber's lifelong obsession with music of all kinds. Listen will change your relationship with the heard world.
